Mitchell Lake
Along the western edge of Mission del Lago, you’ll find Mitchell Lake. The 600-acre lake combined with the surrounding 215 acres of wetlands and ponds and 385 acres of upland habitat to form the 1200-acre Mitchell Lake Audubon Center. The Center has gained global acclaim as a world-class bird sanctuary and eco resource.
The lake is positioned on a natural migratory bird route and serves as a resting point for tens of thousands of birds each year. Bird watchers come from all over the world to see the unique variety of birds that visit there. Among the more than 300 species observed are pelicans, egrets, roseate spoonbills, wild ducks and hawks.
The Mitchell Lake Audubon Center welcomes guests to hike the 7 miles of nature trails, visit the Nature Center or come in a classroom setting for educational presentations. Also, watch your calendar for events hosted at the Nature Center.
In years to come, the expansion of the Medina River Greenway Trail is planned to connect Mission del Lago and Mitchell Lake Audubon Center for even easier access.
